BIOGRAPHY

Trikaal – Across-Cultural Music Journey of Nepal.
It was three years ago that the trio Navaraj, Santosh and Sujay found themselves exploring and harmonizing their efforts in creating a uniquely flavored music by fusing together the Eastern and the Western style, more Eastern however. The success of that musical endeavor soon led them to create yet another publication which you are holding now at the moment.
This album sticks to the Trikaal’s principle of digging out the best of the ‘acoustics’ element of sound by using all natural sounds during and after the recording processes. But what is more important also is the artist’s hands on their instrument and the feelings expressed.
Personal judgments aside, in this second ‘adventure’, these three have shown themselves to have gone through a lot of practices and musical work-out. This very commotion of good playing is felt from the very first track itself where the climaxing ending of the Guitar, Ishraj and Tabla leaves the following tracks to hold-on to this very high. The ending tracks, 5 and 6 slowly drifts you back to reality, placing the mind warmly on the laps of the Teehar festival of lights and a ‘youthful drowning’.

Navaraj Gurung : has stretched his limits of Tabla playing further in this album. In first few tracks, his mastery over the Tabla’s ‘rhythmic narration’ is profound. The fingerings and the flow of the movement is very much powered by his skills in precision – of tempo, timing and feelings. This clearly marks that he really ‘is’ the artist of his stature.

Santosh : on the other hand has imbibed more fluidity in his ‘Ishraj singing’. His sensual bowing of this human-voice alike instrument, Ishraj, has sparked a deep resonance of beautiful feelings in each tracks. Santosh means content in Nepali, perhaps the style he has used in this album has reflected the feeling of his name too! Santosh uses a lot of small, crisp and articulate bowing and fingering technique which makes him one of the best Ishraj player around.

Sujay : an upcoming soil-engineer and a versatile guitarist (who began music with Tabla playing) has harmonized his ‘western style’ into the Eastern feelings – not necessarily classical though, but a different genre of playing. His fingerings and strumming very much reflect the geared-up rock guitar licks however this very instinct has led Sujay to craft out a unique blend of guitar playing that dissolves well with the ‘fellow instruments’ in this album.

The Trikaal Trio took a year to cut this album. Their name itself suggests the unity of three time, place and situation. Now we await the future… a good future for their hands and a good future for our ears!

Songs & Meanings

1.Trikaal.
A beautiful ‘soulplay’ rippling multiple perceptions from a musical dive into the very universe of Trikaal three strands of time. The Ishraj evokes past while the Tabla articulates present and guitar drills through the future. This Trikaal fusion traverses the realm of the body, spirit and mind.

2.Manamuskan.
A sparkling wake of musical delight resonating the Terai ambience – the Southern plains, this feeling especially has been collected small villages in Birgunj. The strumming Murchungna lifts up life’s wings towards the ‘orange sun’ creating silhouettes in the morning fog while a Tabla-break bubbles through the terraces of time and music.

3.Trikor.
A triangular rotation of sound characters with the Tabla propelling the evocation of soulful Ishraj-weeps contrasting the sprightly alerted guitar strings. The ultimate-high is attained as the three swirl to a sweating end.

4.Triverni.
Calm rivers of Trikaal instruments encounter a small rivulet of flute. The mood swims through a slow, rhythmic and meditative flow. In Trikaal realm, the real-world trickles in and merges in the vastness like the flute in this music.

5.Teenoanoa.
A ‘longing’ for someone, something somewhere for their arrival or a return from a different Kaal (time). The Sarangi weeps soulfully in this Karunamaya music filled with compassion and the revival of the grandeur of the folk traditions.

6.Teehar.
Folk fusion of a very Nepali music deeply imbibed in the cultural and religious construction of the Nepali society. The tune transcends images of butter lamps lit up in the warmly night while the youth color the ambience with merry, joyful and humane feelings. This tune is sung in words during Teehar festival in spring after the harvest.
