TRIKAAL’S BIOGRAPHY

‘Trikaal’ !Past – Present – Future!
The name Trikaal is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning three strands of time. Tri could represent a trio, a triangle, a trinity or Shiva’s trident. The ‘life force’ this band is derived from the triangular unity, symbols, and cultural resonance of these two making it a ‘cross-cultural musical troupe’ uniquely formed in Nepal.
Trikaal itself as a band, transcends beyond the limitation of a trio, though originally it was projected one od three musicians and one producer Navaraj Gurung (Tabla), Santosh Bhakta Shrestha (Ishraj), Sujay Shrestha (Guitarist) and Sachida Rauniyar (Album Creator/Director, SAC Music International) Salil Kanika later as a writer and performing artist joined  the band to put the essence of these four initiators their music and skills and weave them together by coining the name Trikaal.

Tabla and Rhythm player Navaraj Gurung takes the leadership of this band. In this third series, Navaraj has more strongly worked on his talents as a composer and music arranger together with his fantastic mastery over the tabla and rhythm instruments. Navaraj makes each of his performance noted as he plays more than just Tabla – the Djembe, Cajon, Conga and a mix of rhythm instruments.
He is known as ‘Tabla Tantrik’. And indeed, on stage this Tabla Tantrik shows his ‘tandav dance ‘with complex finger patterns that it is simply unstoppable from tapping one’s feet on the ground This is the very essence of Trikaal – that its compositions are based on up-beat rhythms to soar the audience to rhythmic musical heights.

The beats are equally complemented by the soft mellow and smoothing sounds of Ishra, Santosh Bhakta Shrestha uplifts the melodic spots of the Trikaal sound resonating the oneness of rhythm, and melodies with this beautiful exotic instrument loved by many. Santosh protects the quintessential quietness into Ishraj melody through his own inner silence – as a devout classical musician.

Sujay Shrestha further adds ‘soft fire’ into the melodic lines of Trikaal. The beauty of Sujay’s style of playing, and what makes it stand out among other Nepali guitarists is the peculiar guitar tones. The tonal coloring of a simple acoustic guitar is very notable and that is what makes the guitar parts speak for themselves whether they be folk melody lines to gypsy swings, the classical or jazz. After recording this album, Sujay has been living in Sweden to continue his studies in Engineering science. Back at home however, his skilled tunes are deeply missed by the band.

Flutist Raman Maharjan from the ancient town of Kirtipur is known for his innovative sounds on the Bamboo Flute. Raman makes his mark with unique tonal variations that speaks for itself beyond cultural and expressive spaces, from a simple array of bamboo flutes. Raman’s meticulous skills are highly appreciated and respected by his colleagues and growing number of students.

Shanti Rajamajhi, our famous percussionist and rhythmist, carries with him the ethos of the Nepali folk, all the way from his hometown in the middle hills of Chainpur in East Nepal. Aman Shahi’s exclusive techniques of Singing Bowls color Trikaal’s ambient expressions on bells , gongs and of course the singing bowls in Trikaal Tantriks. Shyam Nepali further adds the colorful sounds and melody of the Nepali Folk with Sarangi – four stringed bowing instrument unique to Nepali folk culture, with its universal tone of expressing complex notes between the traditional standards.

This is the beauty of Trikaal, no borders and no boundaries. straight from the heart into the heart.

With Trikaal’s energy of a team work and individual exploration/expression, each musician/performer are drawn deeper into expressions they have never tapped before. The powerhouse of Trikaal rhythm is bathed by the beautiful melodic/rhythmic structures of Subin Shakya’s bass guitar and neatly wiped clean by the warm treatment of Drums, Cymbals & Percussion meticulously played and performed by the noted rhythm player NikhilTuladhar. Both of them being a member of an internationally acclaimed Nepali Rock Band Nepathya, pull their experiences and skill together in their playing,. Nikhil’s high  spirits on the rhythm and percussion has its root in traditional Newari Culture of the Kathmandu Valley. His combination of the tradition and the modern is what gives color to his sound. Nikhil’s power plays always adds up to the building heights of Navraj’s tabla and rhythm thumps. In this cyclic forms of musical performance. Trikaal stands unique undefined and autonomous on its own in the fusion music world at home and abroad.

On my part I have a rather strange weaving with Trikaal both as its title and text creator to being a musician therefore it is obviously difficult to write about oneself. In the essence, my search to transcend the earthy sounds of  didgeridoo and natural sounds, keeping the respect of ancestral tones and colors of the red earth of aboriginal dreamtime alive to a high spirited Nepali folk and world rhythm merging both ancient and the technological innovation has found its right place with Trikaal.

Behind the energy field of musician, Sachida Rauniyar, stands out not just as a music producer of Trikaal but as one important initiator of this whole vibration itself called Trikaal. Since his childhood, Sachida says he was always  inspired to pursue innovative ideas and enjoyed the risk involved in this process. And indeed, what started as unique and equally challenging task to put ten professional musicians together,  Sachida has finally presented Trikaal in all its colorful form. Sachida is constantly in a process to create newer albums and till date he has produced more than 40 music albums. The symbol of Trikaal for Nepal is that this is the first ever group of more than ten musicians and lined up in an ensemble of rare and unique sounds and one that still keeps continuing.
More newer collaborations willing spirits. Ever weaving harmony. The band has high regards for Sachida and Navaraj for keeping  it not just as a band but as a commune of friends who understand the true art of music. It is very symbolic for us all in the band and, hopefully also to the audience too, that this kind of musical gathering does project strong positive energy in our times as we create and share.

That is why we are back , with a fresh start with Trikaal 3. Breathe well in Trikaal Nepal…. keep creating and reaching out dear friends.

Trikaal – 3’Global Waves’

Global Waves is an outcome of three years of rigorous, practice composition sessions all in the spirit of collaboration. As, Nepal was going through socio-political transformations,  The creation process of Trikaal was equally crucial to keep’ on’ among the musicians and its producer. The process being spontaneous and from heart inspiration was also related to life factors taking place around.
This album contains a diverse choice of musical offering — from calm meditative mantra songs to savvy samba-blues from calming eastern classical lines to jazzy duets from typical Nepali folk improvisations to upbeat and progressive trance fusion.
Trikaal being an open musical-space for all musicians at home and abroad is adorned with the creative involvement of internationally acclaimed artists like Anni Choying Drolma (Shanti River,  Jewels of Heaven) & Bijay Vaidya (Colors of East-West) and Gyanu Radha Gorkhali (Jewels of Heaven) Krishna Darji presents the Pannche Baja (Folk Tantra) to yield a beautiful ballad of instruments speaking Nepali folk ethos. Rajendra Kama, who accompanies rhythm with Bijay Vaidya has played the Udo (Colors of East-West), Sabu Lama (Samba Himalaya) and Girish Subedi (Trikaal Air) from Mukut Band jams with Mouth Harmonica as special appearance.
Trikaal III is a major contribution of Tabla Tantrik – Navaraj Gurung and Sachida Raunlyar – our album creator and producer. Navaraj pulled the cords together for organizing creating and recording together. It was Navaraj’s approach with Santosh Bhakta Shrestha and Sujay Shrestha to explore further into refined tones and styles slightly departing from what Trikaal was playing earlier. Sachida on the other hand focused on the qualitative approach of this album in terms of its sound and presentation in total the whole team was encouraged with these creative efforts.
Navaraj and Salil tried out a different approach to create a version of progressive trance (Trikaal Air) at home-based in*sense studio with virtual instruments merging acoustic sounds and instruments ‘ Navaraj further jammed up with Nepal acclaimed DJ Raju and pianist Upendra Man Singh in Jam Freak Street, convinced by album creator and producer Sachida Nand to explore further possibilities of Trikaal tones.
In total, Trikaal III Global Waves is a colorful and lively presentation and coming together of artists from a boar walk of life into a common landing ground called Trikaal music!

Song’s List :

1.Shanti River— “ A mellow Buddhist chanting by Ani Chyoing Dolma gathers momentum of serendipity in this colorful composition. Ripples of the rhythmic-vocal uttering by Tabla Tantrik, Navaraj himself playing intricate Table beats bridges the colorful melody of Flute, Ishraj and Guitar. Shanti River is a dedication to the new waves of peace in the world and an evocation of peace now forever.

2.Samba Himalaya — “ Blend of blues and eastern-classical-jazz in the soul-deep cadence of Tamang – Shelo – the very ‘heart’ beat of the Nepali highland Tamang culture. Didgeridoo and Mouth Organ fire a soft groove while Ishraj, in its most joyful form jazzes up the Himalayan lore of Bamboo Flute into a savvy samba story of love.

3.Flowers Of Life — “ It is dedication to the pure spirit of love and its cherished moments of Iife. This piece recharges the inner spirits of colors and sounds of a prosperous and peaceful world full of flowers of creations as we march into new paths of social and cultural harmony.

4.Jewels of Heaven — “ Anni Choying Drolma’s another impromptu chanting leading into the void of meditative silence of Om Mani Padmne Hung’ mantra is absorbed and layered subtly with simmering Sitar strings played by the noted Gyanu Radha Gorkhali to resound the mantras essence. This piece is dedicated to the jewels of inspiration in the heaven of creative minds.

5.Folk Tantra— “ Somewhere far away in a small village in the heart of Nepal a beautiful bride weeps as the groom and his family members start their journey by foot to his village, perhaps few-days-walk away with the bride on a decorated palanquin. Though it is a poetic image, the suffering of women inside their home and heart in rural towns and villages is one aspect of life overlooked by rest of the bourgeois world. This piece, colored by traditional Panchai Baja, played by five-instrument band of Krishna Darji, is a dedication of hope and joys to our sisters to end their suffering.

6.Colors of East-West— “ Bijaya Vaidya’s virtuosity comes from the exuberance of his skilled playfulness with Sitar. Vaidya has bridged his poetic Sitar melody with Trikaal rhythm powered by Cajon from Spain, the clay-pot Matka, Dholak and Tabla from South Asia, and of course the Guitar from universal musicscape. With a mild tone of ‘blues’ hue, this progressive jam-up is a fusion of forms and musical colors from two hemispheres of the planet.

7.Trikaal Tantriks  — “A crisp version of the elaborate thirty-minute-long music piece from Trikaal II. This composition yields the essence of what was originally composed during the fresh start of the entire Trikaal ensemble. Intricately improvised music relative to a rainbow of instruments, is what has made this number so popular over time. It still appears synonymous as Trikaal’s Signature tune. The music video of the ‘tantriks’ showcases the very essence of this flamboyant improvisation in its most expressive form.

8.Jam Freak Street — “DJ Raju has not only designed the covers for three consecutive. Trikaal albums but in this third, has collaborated with its musicians to collectively create a rhythmic dance number showcasing contemporary choice of upbeat dance music audience in Kathmandu. The flow of Piano, Saxophone, Electric Guitar, Flute sways a mellow movement to the trickling Tabla and drum improvisations.

9.Trikaal Air — “These are your captains Kanika and Tantrik. We are flying through hypersonic space across the past present and the future. You are experiencing the altered state of sound. There is no centre, space everywhere space… space… space .” This spacey sci-fi beat of Trikaal Air has engines of spiritually charged didgeridoo drone and its intricate rhythmic cycles in a blend of Pan Flute and virtual Synths flared up by Sall Kanika while Tabla Tantrik – Navaraj fuses an expressive articulation of Tabla, Conga and Percussion to fire up Trikaal Air’s jet of Dance – mix for the upbeat Trikaal audience.
Loosen your seat belts, the flight is at mach-3!
