MARUNI:

The Maruni song and dance is very popular all over the Kingdom specially in the mid hilly region of Nepal among the Magar, Gurung, Darai, Kumale, Rai and Limbu communities. It is performed throughout the year and especially during Tihar festival. The Maruni songs are based on different regas and reginis and the dance are performed in group by men in the guise of women, wearing woman’s costumes, bangles and jewelleries. In maruni, the male dancer is called ’Purushunge’, and the female ‘Maruni’ and those playing madal are called ‘Madale’ ,Mujura players are called ‘Mujarai’ and the singers, the ‘Gidange’. The combination of Maruni charitra, Muruni Khyali and Sorathi is collectively known, as Maruni Dance. The Shikhabar of Myagdi district is the origin of Maruni.
